Seedy Sunday & Pancake Yum!

We were really excited to take part in Seedy Sunday at the Open Market at the beginning of the month, a true highlight in any gardener’s calendar!

The event was bursting with an incredible variety of seeds, from dahlias and cherry tomatoes to heritage parsnips. It’s such a brilliant concept: bring along seeds to donate and swap, or simply pick up a pack for just £1. Whether you’re an experienced grower or a complete beginner, the welcoming and accessible vibe makes it easy to get involved.

We loved the sight of tables piled high with seed packets, each one carrying the promise of something delicious or beautiful to grow. The market was buzzing, and the atmosphere was full of positivity and curiosity.

A Warm Welcome and Big Ideas

We had the pleasure of meeting some of the incredible organisers behind Seedy Sunday, along with a team of dedicated volunteers. They were so supportive of our idea, and we left feeling even more inspired! Armed with our carefully chosen seeds, we’re setting out to experiment with growing in Sussex—our ultimate dream? One day, a flourishing lemon orchard!

Okay, maybe that’s a little ambitious, but we’re excited to see what we can grow indoors with the right care. It takes around 3–5 years for a lemon tree grown from seed to bear fruit, but with rising temperatures and a little patience, it might just be possible.

And speaking of lemons… Seedy Sunday had us thinking about all the ways to use them. With Pancake Day around the corner, what better way to celebrate than with a citrusy twist on a classic?

Limoncello Pancakes

Light, fluffy, and with a grown-up kick of Limoncello, these pancakes are the perfect way to bring a little sunshine to your plate.

Ingredients:

• 150g plain flour

• 1 tbsp sugar

• 1 tsp baking powder

• ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

• A pinch of salt

• 250ml buttermilk (or milk with a squeeze of lemon juice)

• 1 egg

• 1 tbsp melted butter

• 1 tbsp Limoncello

• Zest of 1 lemon

For the syrup:

• 2 tbsp Limoncello

• 1 tbsp lemon juice

• 1 tbsp honey

Method:

1. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, and salt.

2. In a separate bowl, beat together the buttermilk, egg, melted butter, Limoncello, and lemon zest.

3. Gradually fold the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, stirring until just combined (a few lumps are fine!).

4. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and add a little butter or oil.

5. Spoon in small amounts of batter, cooking until bubbles form on the surface. Flip and cook until golden brown.

6. While the pancakes cook, mix Limoncello, lemon juice, and honey for a simple syrup.

7. Stack the pancakes high, drizzle with syrup, and finish with a dusting of icing sugar or extra lemon zest.

Sowing, Growing & Enjoying

Seedy Sunday left us feeling inspired—not just to grow, but to create, cook, and share. Whether you’re planting tomatoes, swapping parsnips, or flipping pancakes, there’s real joy in nurturing something from seed to table.

Here’s to good food, good company, and many more green-fingered adventures ahead!
